Premonition

''Premonition'' by Henryk Weyssenhoff (oil on canvas, c.1893)

Come in little children

Sit by the fire

I will tell you a story

The night has come

The moon will soon rise

Snow covers the land in silent misery

Come in little children

I will tell you a story

When the dogs howl and the only

Other sound is silent footsteps in the snow

Who is next, you cannot know

Come in little children

I will tell you a story

Stay with me by the fire

Do not look through the window

Leave the bolted door closed

Let the dogs scratch to be let in

Death will pass our door and find another soul

Waiting to be taken tonight

And a hand reaches through the darkness
